I have never taken much notice of my age, partly because my birthday is rarely acknowledged and partly because it seems largely irrelevant. That's fine for me. I am an ordinary person, jogging along with life. My age is irrelevant, not only to me but to everyone else I imagine. However, in some walks of life, it is important to know how old someone is and there has been much discussion about Biden's and Trump's ages, although where Trump is concerned, he has barely moved on from infancy. Yesterday an aide, who looked as though he was just out of short trousers, was asked the age of the new President elect of Nigeria. 'He's older than me,' came the quick response. 'Age is just a number.' The reporter, becoming very close to discriminating against someone said, 'What about his shaking hands? He may have Parkinson's.' Bad move on the journalist's part. I have shaky hands, I don't have Parkinson's and my brain is in good working order. Of course it is wrong to discriminate against someone who is old or suffering from a disability but on the other hand if you are being elected to run a country I think the people are entitled to know how old you are because the position is usually for at least 5 years.
Age becomes even more critical when we compare women to men. Last week Don Lemon on CNN had the temerity to say that women were in their prime in their 20s, 30s and possibly 40s, and that Nikki Haley who is running for President is past her prime! Oh dear how sexist was that? He was suspended for a week, insufficient punishment in my book. So that would mean that women, who have a limited period to produce children, must also wrap up their entire career by the time they are 45, when life apparently ends for 50% of the population. And while a woman is too old to be President before she reaches 50 it is perfectly ok for men to rule the world into their 90s, as they have often done. Give me a break.
